Egypt President Hosni Mubarak Resigned

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's decision to hand power to the military boosted stocks around the world on Friday as hopes grew for a peaceful transition of power.

Markets had earlier been lower after Mubarak defiantly held onto his position in a speech the day before, fueling concerns that the political standoff was a long way from being resolved. That sentiment was lifted when Vice President Omar Suleiman told state TV that Mubarak had resigned.

"In these difficult circumstances that the country is passing through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave the position of the presidency," Suleiman said. He has commissioned the armed forces council to direct the issues of the state."

Castellated Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has temporarily left Cairo with his family on Friday, a source close to the government told, but his destination was not immediately clear yet.

"Mubarak has left Cairo with all his family," but refused to say whether the president had left the country or was headed to his residence in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. News of his departure comes on the 18th day of monolithic nationwide rallies demanding his immediate derangement.

Thousands of protesters have rejected concessions made by Mubarak's government and vowed to keep demonstrating until their demands are met. "He has to leave the country, our demands are clear," said Magdy Sabry, one of thousands blockading the state television building in central Cairo.

"We want the entire National Democratic Party to be dissolved and to get out because they have destroyed the country," he said.

Egypt's Mubarak Refuses to Quit Presidency

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak has said he will stay in office and shift all power only after September's presidential election.

Mr. Hosni Mubarak said he would assign some powers to Vice-President Omar Suleiman, but would ignore "diktats from abroad". Thousands of anti government protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square reacted angrily to his speech.

Mr. hosni Mubarak had already sworn not to stand in September's poll.

"I express a commitment to carry on and protect the constitution and the people and transfer power to whomever is elected next September in free and transparent elections," Mr Mubarak said.

Directly addressing protesters "in Tahrir Square and beyond" in what he said was "a speech from the heart", Mr Mubarak, 82, said: "I am not humiliated to listen to the youth of my country and to respond to them."

He apologized to the families of protesters killed in clashes with the security forces in recent weeks, and said those responsible for their deaths would be punished. He added that the country's emergency law would only be lifted when conditions were right.

Egypt's military had earlier said it was standing ready to "protect the nation". State news agency Mena reported that the high council of the armed forces was in continuous session "to protect the nation, its gains and the ambitions of the people".

Discussion between the government and opposition groups have made little progress, with protesters disillusioned at plans for reform put forward by Mr. Hosni Mubarak's Government. The US government had in recent days stepped up its call for the protesters' concerns to be addressed.

Hosni Mubarak Address

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will address the nation tonight, official media said on Thursday, as word has spread that the embattled president may announce to step down within hours from now.

It is expected that mass protests will resume Friday and organizers are expecting the largest crowd in the capital city to take to streets. The protesters are scheduled to stream in from around the country.

Today, the country witnessed a frenzy of activity from the military and the ruling National Democratic Party, indicating that a major development is likely to unfold.
