Mukilteo Abrogation Traffic Camera Ordinance

The Mukilteo City Council voted to abrogation the ordinance authorizing traffic safety cameras in the city. The vote Monday to take the law off the books reversed a previous decision for additional review.

The Daily Herald reports that more than 70 percent of the voters approved an initiative in November restricting cameras. The council had been treating an initiative as an advisory.

The enterprise was launched by Mukilteo resident Tim Eyman who is promoting similar measures in other Washington cities with camera systems that automatically send tickets to drivers photographed running red lights or speeding. Eyman says the traffic cameras are more about fines than safety.
